A Scenic Virgin Rim Overlook Away From the Crowds
Lars Fork Overlook is one of several spectacular viewpoints along the Virgin Rim near Duck Creek Village. Located roughly halfway between Strawberry Point and Cascade Falls, Lars Fork provides expansive views across the Virgin River drainage, the colorful cliffs and canyons below the Markagunt Plateau, and toward Zion National Park in the distance.
Unlike Strawberry Point, which is reached by a road that can accommodate most passenger vehicles when conditions are good, Lars Fork is a little more off the beaten path.
The overlook is reached by traveling through the surrounding forest on the Markagunt Trail System, making it an especially popular destination for ATV and UTV riders.
If you're looking for a scenic place to stop during a ride, have a snack, take some pictures and simply enjoy the view, Lars Fork is well worth adding to your route.
🏔️ Part of the Virgin Rim
Lars Fork sits along the Virgin Rim, the dramatic geographic break where the high Markagunt Plateau drops toward the valleys and canyons of Southern Utah.
It provides a different perspective than nearby Strawberry Point.
Instead of thinking of these overlooks as interchangeable, we recommend visiting more than one if you have the opportunity. Each provides a different angle across the rim, surrounding drainages and distant canyon country.
Lars Fork is particularly interesting because of its location roughly between Strawberry Point to the east and Cascade Falls to the west, placing it near the middle of this scenic section of the Virgin Rim.
🧡 Red Rocks, Hoodoos & Amphitheaters
The views from Lars Fork aren't just about distance.
Look closely at the terrain along and below the Virgin Rim and you'll see colorful red and orange rock formations, hoodoos, eroded cliffs, ravines and natural amphitheater-like formations scattered throughout the landscape.
Visitors who have been to Cedar Breaks National Monument or Bryce Canyon National Park may notice some familiar-looking scenery. While the formations aren't simply miniature versions of Bryce or Cedar Breaks, the combination of colorful rock and thousands of years of erosion has created some remarkably similar shapes and landscapes along portions of the Virgin Rim.
Because many of these formations sit below the rim or are tucked into side canyons and drainages, they're easy to miss if you're only looking toward the distant horizon.
Take some time to look down into the terrain immediately below the overlooks—you may be surprised by how much there is to see.
👀 Three Different Viewpoints
One of the things we like about Lars Fork is that it isn't just a single overlook.
There are three separate pullouts/viewing areas, each providing a slightly different perspective of the surrounding landscape.
Take a few minutes to explore the different viewpoints rather than stopping at the first one and immediately moving on.
Depending on visibility, you can look across miles of rugged Southern Utah terrain toward the distant canyon country surrounding Zion National Park.
Bring a camera—you'll probably use it.
🚙 Getting to Lars Fork
Lars Fork is accessible from more than one direction through the Markagunt Trail System.
From Strawberry Point
Lars Fork can be approached from the east using the trail system connecting with the Strawberry Point area.
This makes it easy to combine Strawberry Point and Lars Fork into the same ride, giving you two very different views of the Virgin Rim.
From Duck Creek Village
Lars Fork can also be approached from the west through the trail system near Duck Creek Village and the Duck Creek Visitor Center area along Highway 14.
This makes Lars Fork an excellent destination or scenic stop during an ATV or UTV ride originating in Duck Creek.
🛞 What Kind of Vehicle Do I Need?
We recommend accessing Lars Fork with an ATV, UTV or appropriate high-clearance vehicle during the snow-free season.
The route can include rocks, roots, bumps, ruts and uneven terrain. Conditions can also change after storms, heavy traffic or spring runoff.
This isn't a location where we recommend assuming that your passenger car can make it simply because a navigation app shows a road.
If you're traveling in a passenger vehicle and primarily want to experience the Virgin Rim, Strawberry Point may be the better choice when road conditions allow.
That's one of those situations where choosing the right overlook for your vehicle can make for a much better day.
⚠️ Know Before You Go
There are steep drop-offs along the Virgin Rim and no guardrails or barriers at the Lars Fork overlooks.
Stay well back from cliff edges and keep children and pets close.
Loose rock and unstable footing can occur near the rim. Use additional caution when surfaces are wet, snowy or icy.
When arriving by ATV, UTV or other vehicle, park completely out of the travel route so other riders can safely pass.
Weather can change quickly at this elevation. Summer thunderstorms can bring lightning, hail, strong winds and sudden temperature drops.
Cell service may be limited or inconsistent.
Bring water, appropriate clothing and basic emergency supplies whenever traveling into the trail system.
And as with every Virgin Rim overlook, don't risk getting too close to the edge for a photograph.
❄️ Lars Fork in Winter
Lars Fork doesn't disappear when the summer riding season ends—it becomes an entirely different experience.
The Lars Fork Trail is part of the Cedar Mountain Snowmobile Complex, and the Forest Service identifies it as one of the more scenic snowmobile trails in the system.
The route has relatively mild grades and provides access to scenic overlooks with views across the Virgin River Valley and toward Zion National Park.
Normal wheeled-vehicle access should not be expected once winter snow arrives. During winter conditions, Lars Fork is primarily accessed by snowmobile or other appropriate over-snow travel where permitted.
Winter weather and visibility can change rapidly, and snow can hide terrain features that are obvious during summer.
Always stay on legal routes and check current conditions before heading out.
🌦️ Seasonal Access
Summer
Summer generally provides the easiest access. Lars Fork makes an excellent destination or stop during an ATV/UTV ride through the Markagunt Trail System.
Fall
Fall can be a beautiful time to visit, particularly as the surrounding aspens begin changing color. Temperatures can drop quickly, however, and early snow is possible.
Winter
The Lars Fork area becomes part of the winter snowmobile trail system. Access is generally by snowmobile or other appropriate over-snow travel where legally permitted.
Spring
Spring access can be unpredictable.
Snow may remain in the area long after lower elevations have warmed, and melting snow can leave roads and trails muddy, rutted or temporarily impassable.
If a road or trail is extremely muddy, turn around rather than creating new ruts or traveling around the established route.
🗺️ Make Lars Fork Part of a Bigger Ride
Lars Fork works particularly well as part of a longer scenic ride rather than simply an out-and-back destination.
Depending on your route, available time and current trail conditions, you can combine Lars Fork with other nearby destinations such as Strawberry Point, Cascade Falls and other portions of the Markagunt Trail System.
This is one of the reasons we like Lars Fork: the ride getting there is part of the experience.

If your goal is simply to drive a passenger vehicle to a scenic overlook, we'd generally point you toward Strawberry Point when road conditions are appropriate.
But if you're already exploring the Markagunt Trail System by ATV or UTV, don't skip Lars Fork.
Stop at all three viewing areas, get out of the machine and spend a little time looking around. Each provides a different view, and Lars Fork is usually much more rewarding when you treat it as a place to explore rather than simply another waypoint on the GPS.
